A vital part of living as a Christian is sharing God’s gifts with others. The power of our collective gifts is enriched through the connectional giving system of the United Methodist Church. Most of the money you give is used to support the ministry efforts of St. Stephen’s. In addition, your contributions help people in need regionally, nationally, and globally.

YEAR END GIVING TIPS:
YEAR END CONTRIBUTIONS TO ST.
STEPHEN'S UMC AND LEGISLATIVE CHANGES
TO CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS UNDER THE CARES ACT
Did you know……. The CARES ACT for 2020 now allows taxpayers who do not itemized their deductions to take a charitable deduction of up to $300 for Cash Contributions made in 2020 to qualifying organizations.
Did you know…… There are Alternative Methods of Donating to St. Stephens – with possible major tax advantages, as described below….
- Donating Appreciated Stock Held for 1 year or longer:
If you own stock that you have held for over a year, and it has appreciated in value since the date you purchased it, and you itemize deductions, you can take a charitable deduction for the fair market value of the stock on the day of your donation. In addition, by donating the appreciated stock to St. Stephens, you can avoid the capital gains tax that would be due had you sold the stock first, and then donated the cash to St. Stephens.
St. Stephens has established an account with TD Ameritrade to specifically handle the donation of appreciated stock to St. Stephens.
- Donation of your RMD (Required Minimum Distribution):
If you own an IRA and you are age 70 ½, you can donate the RMD to St. Stephens tax-free. The gift counts as your RMD for the year, and the good news is, it does not have to be included in your adjusted gross income. This is a great way to avoid paying taxes on your required RMD, support St. Stephens and allows you a big tax break whether you itemize or not.
For further information on either of these two donation opportunities or assistance in setting up the donation, please do not hesitate to contact Bill Huntsman, Financial Administrator, in our church office at your earliest convenience. He will be happy to talk with you and help you through the process.
